I always try to find the positive in any bad situation, and one of the few positives of all of the postponements that happened last year was getting to hang out with Kary and Mike not twice but three times. Though I’m sure they would’ve loved to avoid the stress of having to change their wedding plans, it was so lovely spending time with just the two of them during their engagement session in Ogunquit. At the intimate ceremony and dinner they held last year once they realized their dream wedding would have to be put on hold, and finally, with everyone they love in 2022 at their big wedding at Seacoast Science Center in Rye, New Hampshire.
Since these two had already tied the knot by the time this shindig came around, the ceremony turned into a vow renewal. One of my favorite moments was watching Kary and Mike walk in together, then their guests giving them a standing ovation. They both started laughing, and Kary flashed her wedding ring to the crowd. It was such a celebratory moment—after all the planning and postponing, everyone was together. The joy was palpable!
Another sweet moment in my memory was during Mike’s brother’s best man speech. While incredibly funny at times, he told a story from their childhood about an adult who used to heckle the kids as they walked to and from school. If I recall correctly, the weather was terrible, and Mike’s brother was struggling with an umbrella, so the man teased him. Mike stepped in and said something along the lines of, “Hey, I’m with my younger brother. Go to Hell,” in a very calm yet confident tone, and it stayed with his brother all these years. Mike, please correct me if the wording is a bit wrong, but I think anyone with an older sibling can agree that this is the coolest thing your big sibling can do if you’re getting picked on.
We had been given a bit of a sneak peek at their wedding style at their small event in 2021 (Kary had collected stunning decor for their dinner table), but I was still blown away as I entered the cocktail hour and reception spaces. It was the seaside wedding of my dreams with nautical books, buoys, model ships, a lobster trap as a place card holder, messages in bottles for guests… Need I say more? When I mentioned how gorgeous everything was, Kary told me that it was all the stuff she had collected over the years from her house. I now picture the two of them living in the loveliest nautical museum.
On to the photos! Here are some of our favorites.
