When Megan and Derek told us they were planning a wedding at her aunt’s campground in Gouldsboro, Maine, my brain immediately started picturing the many camping trips I had taken as a kid. Sure, there were some camping excursions on MDI, but most were in the middle of the woods, far from the sea. My brother also owns a campground in Gouldsboro (what are the chances?), so I asked if he had heard of Ocean Wood Campground. It’s not currently open to the public, so my brother said something along the lines of, “oh… That’s THE campground other campground owners want to visit.” My excitement doubled.
Megan and Derek sent over some maps, but there wasn’t much as far as photos online. I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t have done it justice anyway. It was stunning! We had a sneak peek of the barn at their welcome party the night before, but we hadn’t seen the coastal views yet. The ceremony was at a wooded campsite that led out onto the cliffs. Megan and Derek entered the ceremony together, one of my favorite parts of the day. They walked toward each other beside the water from different directions before meeting in the center where the ceremony would occur. Megan gave Derek the cutest little wave from a distance.
Another site was set aside for a few family photos (not many, though, because they wanted to keep things as candid as possible). Lastly, a small hike led to the barn, where cocktail hour and the reception took place. Their vision for the day was a relaxed celebration where guests could wander, play lawn games, and camp out after. Their planner, Rachel Sission, pulled it together perfectly.
After dinner, we slipped out of the reception and walked back down to where the ceremony had taken place. Megan and Derek wanted some portraits of them alone in the space. I always recommend planning some time to sneak away at sunset on your wedding day. Not only do we get great light, but you get a chance to catch your breath and spend some time alone, soaking it all in. These two spent some time on the campground swings before exploring the coastline a little more.
Upon our return, the wedding party surprised Megan at the reception with a choreographed dance. Joel and I knew about the dance, but we were unaware that Derek would jump in halfway through. Megan was delighted!
Also, I have to mention my love for Megan’s romper. I’m 100% here for being comfy AND cute on your wedding day.
Here are our favorite photos from the day!
