I am in my ninth year of photographing weddings, and somehow, the two hottest wedding days I’ve ever experienced both happened this year. Chelsea and Nick’s Portland, Maine elopement was the first. They flew to Maine to elope (a somewhat spontaneous decision!), and it was a scorcher!

Chelsea and Nick are living out-of-state while she finishes school, so Chelsea’s stepmom, Julie, did a bulk of the planning. She did everything from chatting with me on the phone about plans to making sure there were plenty of snacks and chilled bottles of champagne ready for popping at every location. Thanks Julie!

I had only exchanged one email with Chelsea since a lot of communication went through Julie, so I was a teensy bit nervous when I started the day with Chelsea at the lovely Portland Harbor Hotel. The nerves quickly vanished as I was instantly taken by how Chelsea lights up the room. She has the biggest smile and a great laugh, and I quickly felt like part of the group. When I met Nick later on, he immediately complimented my shoes, and I couldn’t help but notice that he had picked a pretty snazzy pair to wear as well. High five!

We headed to Portland City Hall for their ceremony, an impromptu first dance and some refreshments before heading to Portland Head Light for a few final portraits. The humidity at the lighthouse was intense, but these two were totally up for walking up and down several hills with me for photos. Yay!

Finally, before we get to the photos, I have to mention the Avengers backpack. It belonged to Chelsea’s best friend’s son, and it was a very important part of the day. The bag came with us everywhere and held all of the important things– makeup for retouching, hydration and, I believe, the wedding rings were in there as well. All weddings need an Avengers backpack.

Here are my favorite photos from Chelsea and Nick’s Portland, Maine elopement!
